I got an email today from the GOP telling me to download their new toolbar.
Being a good email reader I did what they told me to do, it was quick, easy and voila now I can raise money for the GOP just by doing what I normally do, waste time learn valuable information on the internet.
After a few minutes of random browsing I checked back into my stats and I had raised $1.01!

Not bad, especially if you get a few thousand people using it during the next few months. Not sure how this works with campaign finance reform and wish the GOP site would be a little more clear in that regard.
The one thing I don't like about it is you have to use yahoo to search, I happen to like the other team.
Try it out for yourself. Then post your thoughts back here.

Funny
I was just going to blog about this.
Eek
I'd be afraid the GOP would turn over the search information to the NSA. You know, for the war on terror.
Just checked my stats
Just checked my stats apparently yahoo didn't like half of my "random" clicks. Down to .50 cents.
@davidall you can still blog about it if you want :-)
HAha
I raised more money than Ethan! A $1.38 doing searches on Obama! = )
GOP Toobar hijack
The the GOP.com toolbar created by Yahoo and FreeCause appears to contain a type of spyware. Specifically, the toolbar hijacks the browser's address bar such that any term entered into the address bar other than a URL, is surreptitiously routed through the GOP toolbar.
The toolbar edits the browser's config file in Firefox without asking for permissio (which no one would rightly give). It employs a different tactic with a similar result in IE.
More troubling is the fact that the address bar continues to be hijacked even after the toolbar is uninstalled!
The same hijack exist with other toolbars created by Yahoo and FreeCause:
- Susan G. Komen Foundation toolbar
- Ron Paul toolbar
- AnySoldier.com toolbar
- NRA - ILA toolbar
- Denver Post toolbar
- Gaia Online toolbar
- Special Operations Warrior Foundation toolbar
- Autism Awareness toolbar
This is highly unethical, and if not illegal, it certainly should be.
No problems...
I've been using the GOP toolbar with no problems. Sure, the individual earnings are meager, but with enough people using it the $$ could add up. It's simple and it's free. I would that think that anyone who's truly committed to help John McCain get elected would be willing to give it a shot. It requires pretty much zero effort to raise a few bucks.
