Who's More Internet Savvy: Al Qaeda or Americans?

In November, Defense Secretary Robert Gates declared, "It is just plain embarrassing that al Qaeda is better at communicating its message on the Internet than America [is]."

In that spirit, the DOD has produced the following video to showcase what it is doing to fight back online:

Not a question of who is more savvy.

Good video and all. And the DOD is doing some good stuff online, for sure.

But Al Qaeda will always find ways to effectively disseminate their message via the web.

I think it's more a game of whack-a-mole with regard to curbing the terrorists use of the Internet to convey, collaborate, and grow their influence. You shut down one website, and 10 others spring to life in their place.

Check out this blog post I wrote on the matter last March for further information on how terrorists are using the Internet.

It's a question of who's savvier at communicating

Hi David: Thanks for your comment. I agree that shutting down Web sites is like playing whack-a-mole -- the recent activity regarding Wikileaks is a good example -- but I'm not sure why you raised this issue. Gates's point, like the video's, is that we need to counteract al Qaeda's savviness with our own -- by communicating our ideas better.
