McCain Makes America Smile

Disclosure: As you know, I'm "in" for John McCain. And if you haven't already, please consider giving The Mac $10 or $15 or more with a recurring donation. He's earned it.

I hear a lot of feedback from the Slatecard community, conservative bloggers, and friends about how much they disagree with The Mac's policy positions. That's fair. And to be honest, I wouldn't have supported every single policy position of any of the candidates. I'm sure you feel the same way.

But one thing is clear: John McCain continues to make me smile because of his willingness to be available and accessible through alternative media hubs and clever cameos which help reach new audiences. (Remember his cameo on 24? I do.) Further, he's always spot-on with his messaging.

To put it another way, I'd love to have a beer with this guy because he's so darn authentic.

Take for example his appearance last night on Saturday Night Live. Now, of course, on a Saturday at 11:30 PM there's no chance I'm at home watching SNL, but the clips always find a way to get to YouTube or a similar site. [Note: Every SNL clip with McCain has been removed for Copyright violation - ugh.]

I did however find this CNN package of McCain's appearance and I know that CNN won't yank it because they "get" that releasing their content helps them in the long run.

Another great example of McCain's willingness to, well, communicate effectively through whatever mediums necessary is this interview with Glamour Magazine's Glamocracy blog.

The one excerpt I really like is John McCain's answer on what he thinks of Hillary Clinton:

ON HILLARY

JM: Senator Clinton...has clearly been an incredibly effective candidate and one that has been in many ways a role model for other women who seek public office.

GLAMOUR: Do you feel that she has been treated fairly on the campaign trail as a woman?

JM: You know, I don't know because I'm not objective enough to make the judgment. I simply don't know.

But I know the one thing that I try to avoid in my campaigns is feeling sorry for myself. It's easy to do, pick up the paper this morning, read a story that's negative, oh, my God, they're picking on me. You just can't do that. You just can't do that.

But I admire Senator Clinton's tenacity, her knowledge of the issues. We have different philosophical views. And the fact that she has really worked in a Herculean fashion in this campaign. When you look at her schedule, it's been unbelievable.

By the way, could I just finally add, I've never counted Senator Clinton out. I didn't before the New Hampshire primary, I didn't before the Ohio primary, I didn't before the Texas primary.

GLAMOUR: And now?

JM: I just don't count her out. I mean, I understand the pundits and the numbers and all that. But she has great capabilities.... I have traveled with her and know her, not real well, but certainly know her well and I respect her a lot.

I know what you're thinking: David, I thought you loathed Hillary Clinton?

Eh, I disagree with her positions for sure, but I have mad respect for her as a politician. And more importantly, because I listen I realize that a lot of my friends that happen to be female - regardless of whether they're Republican or Democratic - really admire her.

John McCain gets that and his artfully respectful answer will help the audience of Glamour catch that too. In my opinion, at the end of the day, McCain will pick-up more female voters who read this interview because HRC will likely lose and Barack's not really an alternative. And because of the power of the Internet, we can share the news on outlets like TechRepublican, our Facebook profile, etc. Heck, I bet some female bloggers from both sides of the aisle will write about it.

But look, The Mac is not just blowing smoke rings and talking a good game. He's constantly noting the influence of his mom, his wife Cindy, and his daughter (check out Meghan's rad blog and this vid interview I did with Meghan after the YouTube debate).

Further, his right-hand Ace on the campaign is Carly Fiorina, who is not only one of the most accomplished women ever but a truly remarkable person who is totally cool with being available and accessible to the blogosphere. (This interview I did with Carly was neat.) If I were a betting man I'd wager on Carly becoming McCain's Chief-of-Staff which would add a much-needed business perspective to how we run the country.

    CONCLUSION

The two constituencies I feel John McCain is going to have the hardest time with are Gen Next and Millennial voters (who vote darn it!) and women. Some of the challenges to reaching these constituencies will be nearly impossible to hurdle - that's just the way it is; but The Mac is willing to try (at least with women) and that makes me smile.

(Not that I have all the answers but since you probably missed it, here's the link to the piece I wrote last October on "How to reach women voters (from this guy's perspective).")

Keep making America smile Mac and at least 50% +1(ish) will be there for ya this November. Heck, some of us will be there for ya financially too to help ensure that you can reach those voters. Natch.
